Carey Mulligan opened up about her new film, Promising Young Woman as she hopes it will move the audience and make them laugh, cry and cringe at the same time. The movie is written and directed by Emerald Fennell.

It revolves around Cassie who is a med-school dropout. The character experiences a personal tragedy that moves her to plot revenge against rapists, misogynist men and the people who protect them. It is a thriller inspired from the #MeToo-era.

The British actress opened up as she said it is not about a “goodie and baddie” situation. She shared the fact she likes about the film that makes people re-examine. The actress said, “I like the fact that the film makes us kind of reexamine, ‘How have we all been complicit in this?’ There’s so much to unpack about the way people talk about consent.”
Carey admitted that she was scared of the role initially as she decided that her reaction was a sign to take it on. The actress shared that she likes to play parts where she can’t figure things out on the page. She explained, “There are elements of it that are very serious and need to be handled delicately, but for the rest of it, it’s a comedy.”
She is also one who boasts about a pop-heavy soundtrack which is mostly female-performed as well as catchy. “I really enjoy being in a film where people are very excited about Britney Spears being on the soundtrack,” says the actress.

The new movie, Promising Young Woman also features a cast full of familiar faces. It includes Alison Brie, Connie Britton, Max Greenfield, Laverne Cox, Bo Burnham, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Adam Brody. All of them are playing the characters opposite to the kind of characters they are known for.

The movie was a 23-day shoot as Carey described everyday to be different on set. She shared that there were different, amazing actors coming in every day. The British actress said, “And [filming] was going from full romantic comedy to revenge movie to thriller. The whole thing was quite exhilarating.”

Although Carey is excited and hopeful that the audience will find the film entertaining, she also looks forward to her two children to be age appropriate to watch the movie. She is also excited for her husband, Marcus Mumford to watch the movie as she shares two children, Evelyn and Wilfred with him.

“I want them to see this film or something like it,” she says. “Ideally they won’t grow up with the same kind of influences that we did that normalizes this kind of behavior. I think the world has moved on, to a degree, or is in the process of moving on.” Promising Young Woman is now playing in theaters.
