Gemma Arterton opened up about her big break for her film role as a Bond girl in Quantum of Solace. In a recent interview, she spoke about her role as the intelligence operative, Strawberry Fields.
She was a part of the 22nd James Bond movie which stars Daniel Craig as the titular agent. The actress shared that at the beginning of her career, she was poor and was happy to be able to work and earn a living. However, she opened up about the criticism she gets for accepting her role in Quantum of Solace.
She defended her decision and shared that she was 21 at the time and had student loan. Gemma said, “I still get criticism for accepting Quantum of Solace, but I was 21, I had a student loan, and you, know, it was a Bond film. But as I got older I realized there was so much wrong with Bond women.”
In the movie, her character and James Bond were assigned to disguise themselves as teachers on sabbatical who were staying in a cheap hotel. Bond refuses and checks them into a five-star hotel where he seduces Strawberry.
“Strawberry should have just said no, really, and worn flat shoes,” Gemma said of the scene. However, she said that she will not be choosing a role like Strawberry today. The actress said, “I can’t really remember what’s in it or what I did, but I know I wouldn’t choose a role like that now.”
The actress recalled that the character was funny and sweet but she did not have anything to do, neither did she have a backstory. Daniel will be reprising his role as James Bond for the last time in 2021’s No Time To Die. He had shared that he does not refer his female love interests in the movies as Bond girls.
“I don’t even call them Bond girls,” he told Vanity Fair. “I’m not going to deny it to anybody else. It’s just I can’t have a sensible conversation with somebody if we’re talking about ‘Bond girls.’ “
The movie also consists of Oscar-winner Rami Malek and Ana de Armas and it will also mark the 5th time that Daniel will be playing Bond. He will be the longest serving 007 since the first James Bond movie which was premiered in 1962.
No Time to Die will release on April 2, 2021.
