The Tesla Model 3 exploded in an underground car park in Shanghai on Tuesday, Chinese media reported.
No one was injured in the blaze, Tesla said in a statement sent to Chinese media. Preliminary analysis indicates that the accident was caused by a lower impact of the vehicle, the car manufacturer said in a report.
Tesla did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment. It is not immediately clear whether the affected Model 3 is a version made or imported locally.
China’s largest battery-producing company, Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), has said it did not make battery pack for the car that spontaneously combusted, according to Chinese media.

In April 2019, Tesla sent a team to investigate a suspected explosion in one of its cars parked in Shanghai.
Elon Musk’s electric cars have been tested in China for a number of reasons, such as their own driving technology. Earlier this month, state-owned Economic Information Daily said in a comment report there were at least ten reports by 2020 of drivers failing to control their Tesla vehicles in China.
Tesla’s Growth Story In China
While there is growing competition from several electric car launches such as the Nio, the Tesla’s Model 3 was the best-selling electric car in China last year, according to the China Passenger Car Association.
The company has revived production at its factory in Shanghai since its opening more than a year ago, and reportedly exported some Chinese-made cars to Europe.
Tesla announced on Monday that it has officially launched the delivery of its Model Y made in China.
