A small bomb blast near the Israeli embassy in India’s capital, Delhi, struck nearby vehicles but did not injure anyone.

Police said a “very low intensity improvised device” caused the blast.

Previous Instances

Israel said an investigation was under way but one of the Israeli officials told the media it was considered a terrorist incident.

The wife of an Israeli official was injured when a bomb exploded under her car in New Delhi nine years ago.

On the same day, February 13, 2012, a bomb was planted under the car of an Israeli ambassador to the Georgian capital Tbilisi but it failed to explode.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has blamed Iran for both of the 2012 incidents – allegations denied by Tehran.

Blast In India’s Capital

Friday’s blast happened just after 5pm local time (11:30 GMT) and the windows of three nearby parked cars blew up.

Police immediately closed the scene of the incident.

“Initial impressions suggest a mischievous attempt to create a sensation,” a Delhi police spokesperson said in a statement.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry said embassy staff were not affected and that the incident was “still being investigated by Indian authorities, who are in contact with Israeli authorities”.

However, an Israeli official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that “although there were no casualties, India and the rest of Israel viewed the blast as a terrorist attack”.
