YouTube has become the latest social network to suspend President Trump.
A Google-managed service has blocked his account from uploading new videos or live streams for at least seven days, and said it could extend the time.
Violation Of Rules
The company said the channel had violated its rules by inciting violence.
The president posted several videos on Tuesday night, some of which are still live online.
Google did not provide details of Mr. Trump’s remarks in the video, which it has blocked, but the BBC found that it was an excerpt from a press conference he gave on Tuesday.
The move comes just hours after civil rights groups had threatened to organise an ads boycott against YouTube.
‘We Hope They Will Make It Permanent’
Jim Steyer – who previously helped coordinate similar action against Facebook last year – had called on Google to go further and take the president’s channel offline.
“We hope they will make it permanent. It is disappointing that it took a Trump-incited attack to get here, but appears that the major platforms are finally beginning to step up,” he tweeted after the suspension.
Google says Mr. Trump could still face his page being shut down if he accidentally falls for its three-times strike policy.
Google’s Statement
“After reviewing, and considering concerns about the continuing violence, we have removed new content uploaded to Donald J Trump’s channel in violation of our policies,” the statement said.
“It now has its first strike and is temporarily banned from uploading new content for at least seven days.
“By paying attention to ongoing concerns about violence, we will also permanently disable comments on President Trump’s channel, as we have done on other channels where there are safety concerns found in the comments section.”
Mr Trump had already been suspended by Facebook and Instagram following last week’s violence on Capitol Hill, until at least the transition and administration change has completed to Joe Biden on January 20.
Twitter went ahead with the imposition of a permanent ban.
Amazon’s Twitch has also disabled Trump’s account on its platform. And Snapchat locked his account.
Shopify, Pinterest, TikTok and Reddit have also taken steps to curb the president-linked content and his calls for the US election results to be challenged as they were fraudulent and stolen from the Republicans.
